Mountain Staircase

The project entails building a long mountain staircase up a steep mountainside.

The concept here was to build a low tech staircase with decks and platforms that connected a private landowner’s garage to his house, some 150 meters up. Building staircases up steep mountain terrain all about how one interacts with the natural flow of water. It's 90% planning and 10% labor.

Alien timber was sourced from a local wood-yard and a solid, low spec design was chosen to build the cascading staircases, platforms and viewing decks. Low tech does not mean low-grade, as this example shows.

The work was an opportunity to employ four unemployed men from the local township of Masiphumele and teach basic carpentry skills, including fence building.
