Compass Fire Place
This is a circular stone fire-pit with surrounding seating and a sloped spiraling entrance.
The concept here was to reflect the theme of the camp-site – this being “Mountain Fynbos”.
One of the skills essential to walking in the mountains is navigation. Here, large stone plinths have been placed at the positions of North, East, South and West. These markers suggest possible direction, and encourage camp-fire conversation relating to directional navigation, stars, the Southern Cross and encourage the guides to share their knowledge of the subject with hikers.
The lowered circular stone fire area also contributes to minimizing the threat of fire.
