Hiking Trails
Between the years of 2003 – 2008 Stephen managed the design and development of the suite of Hoerikwaggo Trails on behalf of South African National Parks, visit http://www.hoerikwaggotrail.org/responsible-tourism/touching-the-earth-lightly.html
He also contributed to the success of the newly established Donkey Trail in the Swartberg Mountains www.donkeytrail.com
The concept here was to recruit and train over 350 previously unemployed persons from townships surrounding the Table Mountain and employ them to undertake tasks associated to footpath building and overnight accommodation construction. Visit: Meridian News for more details.
Over 120 km’s of footpaths were rebuilt and five hiking trails were established (along with trained and accredited guides) namely - The Table Mountain Trail, The Peoples Trail, The Orange Kloof trail, The Silvermine Trail, The Slangkop Trail and preliminary work on the Smitswinkelbay overnight facility, for more information on these trails, visit http://www.hoerikwaggotrail.org/trail-options.html
For this he received the Chief Executive Award for promoting the principle of “touching the earth lightly” in 2008 from Dr. David Mabunda. Visit
