Cut Lights

Creating beautiful light sculptures and employing unskilled woman. These are the two goals of the cut-light project.

One of the main opportunities for alien plant clearing initiative like the Working for Water Program is the creation of secondary (or value added) industries through the clearing of these alien species.

TEL has developed a method of curing and treating thin pieces of cross-cut tress sections through which light is shone. Normally the timber would crack and split almost immediately, but employing a specific treatment and curing process enables the timber to remain in one solid piece.

When light is shone through the timber, the growth rings, resin content and very blue-print of the tree is exposed and almost comes to life.

TEL has experimented with a variety of alien timber species and lighting methods. Each tree species has its own characteristics, mood and feel. The end result are beautiful, eco-friendly wall mounted lights that can be purpose made to order.

Instead of buying cold, high-embedded energy lights (made generally of metals and plastic s) why not by an organic light, made from wood and treated with bees-wax? Instead of contributing to a problem, buying one of these lights contributes to two solutions – biodiversity conservation and job creation!

TEL hopes to be able to employ several women in the near future to take over this project as a business venture (SMME) and further support and develop by-product markets to the great work being done by the Working for Water Program.
